Syria (officially Syrian Arab Republic, Arabic الجمهورية العربية السورية al-Jumhūriyya al-‘arabiyya as-sūriyya) is a state in the Middle East and part of the Mashrek. Syria borders Israel and Jordan to the south, Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, and Iraq to the east. The island of Cyprus is located about 125 km as the crow flies from the Syrian coast. At around 185,000 square kilometers, Syria is about half the size of Germany. In 2010, nearly 21 million people lived in the country, most of them in Aleppo, the capital region of Damascus, Homs, Hama and Latakia.
The 63 v. Chr. Roman province Syria was rich and important, after the Islamization in the year 634 the area changed between sovereign claims. The Syrian Republic was first established in 1930 and became independent in 1946. Since a coup d’état in 1963, the Baath Arab-Socialist party dictates the country dictatorially.
Since the spring of 2011, demonstrations against the Syrian government led to the civil war in Syria, which has so far (as of 3/2017) estimated that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has claimed more than 465,000 deaths. [4] More than 5 million Syrians (as of 3/2017) have fled the country, to neighboring countries or to Europe. 6.3 million more are on the run within Syria. [5] The civil war led to a de facto division of the country. The Islamic State terrorist organization controlled more than half of Syria’s territory in May 2015, but it has barely 15% of its population, while the capital, Damascus, is home to 10 of the 13 provincial capitals and densely populated areas in the west, where the majority of the population lives, continues to be under the control of Syrian government forces. [6] The remaining areas are controlled by rebel groups such as the Free Syrian Army, Kurdish militia, and the al-Qaeda al-Nusra offshoot.
In addition to Sunni Muslims, there are about 12% Alawites in Syria. Even in pre-Islamic times, Christians lived in Syria, today they still account for about 10%. There are eight state and several private universities in the country, including the German-Syrian Wadi International University. Economically speaking, agriculture, the extraction and export of crude oil and the production of textiles and food are important for Syria. The civil war, however, caused a sharp decline in economic performance, with the Syrian lira temporarily suffering from heavy inflation.

If you have an appointment, please look at the websites of the respective German Embassy or Consulate General. There you will find important information about the application (for example, documents to be submitted, etc.) that should be read in advance of the application.
An application for a long-stay visa should generally be accompanied by legalized documents translated into German. Legalization of Syrian documents will be carried out by the German Embassy Beirut until further notice. The documents can be sent to the embassy by post. A personal interview is not required for legalization. Please see the leaflet on the website of the German Embassy Beirut at www.beirut.diplo.de for more detailed information.
Applicants who would like to submit a visa application to a consular office outside their country of residence are responsible for smooth communication at the counter and the translation of application-based documents into the respective national language or into German itself. Costs for the appointment of linguists and / or the translation of supporting documents shall be borne by the applicants.
Visa applicants who are habitually resident in Iraq and who have previously been able to apply to the Visa Bureau for Damascus to apply for a visa are now applying for a visa to the German Embassy in Amman, which continues to be responsible for applicants from Iraq. Applicants from the Kurdish northern provinces of Iraq can now turn to the Ankara embassy.
The German Embassy in Baghdad and the Consulate General in Erbil process visa applications only for a limited group of people. Details below
